How do you light a time-lapse scene?

Say, a flower blooming. Someone told me a rose would take a day and a half or something like that to open up. I wouldn't want to use a flower that took more than 10 hours to do that, and I suspect it'd have to be made under controlled lighting conditions. Anyone tried this?

P.S. I will be using the frame hack on the HPX170.
