How do you handle travel times?

Sorry if this isn't the appropriate forum, but I couldn't figure out where to put this. I got booked by an event company for a 10 hour shoot, normally I don't care about travel times because it's always in town, but the location is 40 miles away. What's the proper way to factor travel time in to the amount of time you're actually shooting for? Or travel costs for that matter? Is the accepted practice to just deal with it no matter what the distance (as a side note, I didn't find out the location until 2 days before the shoot)?

You can charge travel expenses, which have standardized rates, if the company isn't providing transportation themselves. But I would never charge for travel time unless it takes me a day or more to get to the location. If it's only forty miles I wouldn't even mention it. When your work requires going places it's a given you'll have to find a way to get to those places.

That's interesting - converting our rate in the UK gives 69 cents per mile BUT our fuel price is currently $8.50 a gallon!

For local jobs within 1 hour's drive time, my production rates used to be door to door from my office. So travel time was part of the standard 10 hour day rate. For longer drive times travel was 1/2 hourly rate + mileage added on and did not count as part of the production day rate.

Current tech hourly rates for field service with our company are charged door to door regardless of time/distance if we roll a truck.
