Storyboarding makes sense with films, but in music videos, theres so many quick cuts and flips that if u wrote or storyboarded scene or shot for shot, it would be like 50 pages long... so what is the best approach for shooting a music video?

The way ive done ti in the past was have general scenes or ideas and as I shoot just get as much footage of the action as i can, shoot them perform a couple times, then let the editing magic begin. But im sure theres a better way at doing this than that.

Thanks.

With a music video, you generally write an overall treatment. This is the standard expected by most major labels. Some will ask that you submit a budget at the same time, or will let you know thier max budget from the project beforehand. I prefer when you get a budget first, since creativity is not realistic or practical without that.

THE TREATMENT
This should be similar to a film treatment, as a overview of the conceptual approach to be used for the project. This can cover the 'mood' and 'feel' of the video, storyline, locations, time period, description of the characters (artiste or talent), thier attire, the time period, the strategy for the edit or any special post-production work. BAsically outlining ALL major conceptual aspects of the video.

These will vary based on the look you or your clients want for the Music Video.

As far as storyboarding, you generally focus on describing important camera setups. At a minimum, you should depict one for each major element of the storyline (if there is one). If the performance scenes require a specific location with a particular framing, that should be described in storyboards as well.
