I dp mostly with my 7d and direct. I know my 7d (and before my dvx) very well and as such i know how to push it and how not to push it to get what i want. I think knowing the quirks of a camera are very important. that said...the principles of photography are the same on any camera. But i dont think i'd feel comfortable shooting on a camera i didnt know. Where I am theres not much opportunity to shoot on high end cams. Maybe 2 people own a RED and you have to rent it with them as DP. How do you experienced DP's learn so many cameras, bouncing from film to RED to Alexa, to f3, to AF100 to dslr to whatever else. Cuz alot of big Dp's i'm seeing dont even own a personal camera. All these cams behave differently in their own respects and have their own pros and cons. Do you personally rent like it 2 days or so and test them out? Does your production rent it for you to test on the upcoming project?
