How do you guys do it?

Ok, I own both Vegas and Avid Xpress Pro (just bought it) and the render time differences are drastic...1 min 30 sec clip with NO audio in Vegas to Quicktime or Avi is about 14 minutes in best quality...Same file in Avid WITH audio is under ten seconds...A QT reference file takes about 3 seconds in Avid...Given the price differences ($499 to $1600) I still don't see how Vegas competes...Granted the interface is a lot easier to learn, but come on...time is money. I used Vegas for a short time and it served me well, but there is no looking back now.

Re: How do you guys do it?

There's NO WAY it should take 14 minutes in Vegas, unless you've got a lot of effects on the clip -- or possibly Magic Bullet? MB would be the culprit if you're using that.

Re: How do you guys do it?

No effects, no MB, no nothing...just a standard captured 1 and half minute avi...I thought it was really long, but I tried it on 4 different settings.

Re: How do you guys do it?

That's whacked. With no effects, it should take hardly any time. What were your EXACT settings?

Re: How do you guys do it?

What's the source material? If it's DV, then the Best setting serves no purpose but to increase your render time. Stick with Good, which is the default.

Re: How do you guys do it?

Oh Vegas has been slowing down since ver 3. The last update on 3 added 20-25 min. to a 42 min project that used to take 60-75 min. Then VV4 put me over the 2 hour mark for same project. Haven't tried VV5 yet on that mpg2 project, I'm still having trouble with DivX codec stopping 49,944 frames

Re: How do you guys do it?

I'm not sure what you guys are doing. Vegas 5 renders to MainConcept MPEG-2 just a little slower than real time for me. A 22-minute project recently rendered in 29 minutes.

Rendering to AVI is vey quick, especially if there aren't many effects to render.

Re: How do you guys do it?

I don't get it either. I can render a 70-minute project from AVI to MPEG-2 in 79 minutes, which is almost real-time. AVI rendering is, as David said, much faster still. Effects will slow you down regardless of what mode you're rendering to...

There's something obviously quite wrong. The only way you can get a 1:30 clip to take 14 minutes to render would be to, as David said, put Magic Bullet on it or something.

Re: How do you guys do it?

Hunter,
There is LOTS of render data showing that Vegas is getting FASTER, not slower. Our original rendertest from Vegas 2 was used right up to version 5 for testing and there are at least 90 machine results on our sites.

Barry,
What codec is the original avi in? Captured where? If it's a Vegas to Vegas render, it should be at least 4x. On the other side, I just rendered a canopus avi to a vegas avi; 90 second file took 3:02 to render. Transcoding isn't too fast.
Remember also that the QT render requires their code to author, which slows it down even more.

Re: How do you guys do it?

I'm talking about Sony Vegas .AVI's being rendered to MainConcept DVD Architect-compatible MPEG-2's. It's just a little slower than real time.

Re: How do you guys do it?

I concur with Barry and Spot.  An AVI-AVI render takes about 6 minutes for my 22-minute project.  And, as mentioned above, it took about 29 minutes to render to MPEG-2. And, this is a noticeable improvement over V4.

Re: How do you guys do it?

I just tested it right now, for me a 10 minute project in 24p with no effects, renders in 1 second in both good and best quaility.

Would his problem have anything to do with the "Ignore third party codecs" & "Use Microsoft DV codec" options in the preferences menu?

Re: How do you guys do it?

DV 24p 2-3 pulldown

The same 10 minute project (no effects) renders to MPEG-2 (24p 2-3 pulldown w/audio stream) in 6 minutes.

Re: How do you guys do it?

How about comparing the speed of your computers? On a 3.4GHz Pentium it should be faster than on a 1.8GHz.

Re: How do you guys do it?

Sorry, I just tried it again, cause if David said it was impossible then I must have done somthing wrong, and when I ran the render this time (same settings) it took a good 4 minutes and 4 seconds for the 10 minute project.

I know the previous project was done in 1 second cause I played it and it was complete. The filesize was also approx 2.2GB so it definately rendered the whole thing. I wonder what I did differently...
