How do you get the extra wide, cinematic aspect ratio

This is probably editing 101, but I'm wondering how you do it.
Here's an example of what I mean: http://www.vimeo.com/7173182

It's not 16:9, it's more like 16:6 or something. (I'm just grasping at straws for a number).

Is it achieved with a mask of some sort? Is it doable in Final Cut Express?

Many thanks.

Anamorphic films are 2.35:1 or even 2.4:1 That's usually the aspect ratio you see on the back side of a DVD or Blu-Ray box under all the credits. Those are generally film aspect ratios or terms.

To get the HDTV numbers your looking for, it's simple math, multiplied by 9. Say 2.4:1 multiplied by 9 on each side = 21.6:9

You basically crop or matte the composition accordingly. I don't have FCS in front of me now, So I can't recite the steps. Or you could create a custom sequence with the resolution you want and drop in your video on that.

I'm not sure if FC Express is limited in any way for doing that.
