How do you finance?

Perhaps I am just a very poor high school student, however, I am curious how you can afford to finance your short films (not features).

For example; I only have access to my DCR-TRV22E which is a cheap handycam that the family bought.
Do you just invest a lot of your savings in to a respectable camera because you are a hobbyist?
Do you get paid to do film work which covers for it?

At the moment I want to get out there and buy a respectable camera but unfortunately I am earning barely enough to pay board, alcohol and my car!

Take the money you spend on alcohol and your car and you could rent enough gear to make anything. It is all about priorities, and giving up things you like to make things you like more. The small amount of luxuries you give up now will pay you back with more than enough money to fund your work and your play in a much larger way. Or you can spend it on booze and cars and in 20 years have a bunch of drinking and old car stories instead of a bunch of cool films.

Or make a couple of films with whatever you can afford and use those to convince people to give you money to make more.

True you've gotta prioritize.

Save your money. Save save save your money, however you can. A lot of people these days buy a lot of crap they really don't need, and then wonder why they always end up broke.

Also, if you're like me, and sometimes can't wait to save up enough money, and don't mind being in debt for a little while, credit cards are a way to get what you need when you need it. Just be careful and make sure to make your payments and not screw up your credit.
