Normally my timecode is always set to "record run", "no drop frame".
I use "free run" when time of day is important, and then I make sure it is in drop frame so it will stay at the correct time. This is when someone is taking notes about what is being shot and can't be right beside the camera. This way all they do is look at their watch and note the time and subject matter being recorded.
I also use free run when we are doing multiple camera shoots. This way all the timecode with every camera stays identical to the subject being recorded, but with "no drop frame". Each camera can change tape when needed without having to resync the timecode.
"Drop frame" is only used when I want the timecode to stay exactly synced to time of day.
