How do you do Audio Dubbing on DVX?

Hi, I'm just messing around with a friends 4-track tape deck, I'm trying to do an audio dub from the 4-track to the DVX100a but not having any luck.

According to the DVX manual, "It is not possible to record the audio signals if video signals are not input to the S-VIDEO IN/OUT connector or VIDEO IN/OUT connector except when performing audio dubbing."

So anyway, I've got the Left and Right output from the 4-track hooked up to the CH1 AUDIO IN/OUT and CH2 AUDIO IN/OUT on the DVX but I think what I'm really missing is how exactly you go about using the "Audio Dub" feature on the DVX.

So to summarise, how do I get that "AUDIO DUB" button on my DVX to do anything?

Cheers

Contact the place you bought the camera from. they should be able to help you out.

I just shot a full movie on the DVX100A and was using a Mackie 1402 sound board between the mics and the camera and had nothing but problem after problem(first the sound was to noisey then it was to low)so I got sick of messing around with it and just pluged the mics right into the side and the sound was great, much better then when I was using the board, later on I found out that when the DVX100 came out that there was alot of complaints that the line levels where to low at the XLR inputs,so when the 100a was released they boosted the line levels to fix the problem, the only thing you have to watch out for is camera hum through the headphones, the hum dosn't show up on the tape though, but in the earphones it can trick you.

After some experimenting I've found that you can get into audio dubbing like this:

1) Start playing back the footage that you want to dub over

2) Pause where you want the dubbing to begin

3) While Paused, press the "Audio Dub" button

4) "Aud Dub" (or something) shows up on the viewfinder

5) Unpause and start talking into the Mics.

I could only get it to work with the DVX100 native microphones, I tried using an RCA audio in but it didn't show up when dubbing. Anyone managed to use a line in for dubbing?

cheers

Actually, I think I know what the trick is to use a LINE IN (haven't tested)... According to the manual, in the menus, in "AV IN/OUT SETUP" there's the option "A DUB INPUT" and you can switch between MIC (default) and A_IN.

Interestingly it also notes that:
If audio dubbing is performed when the sound has been recorded in the 16-bit audio mode, the sound will be recorded over the sound heard during shooting.

I wonder what gets left of the original audio when you do an audio dub in 12-bit mode? Also, what would the difference between the orignal audio being 12-bit compared to 16-bit?
