How do you create Proxy MXF P2 AVC-Intra Files that retain time code?

Does anyone know of a way to compress native mxf P2 avc-intra files to a low res proxy that retain time code?

I want to compress the video to a very low res that retains time code, have someone else edit, and send me back the project file so I can reconnect it with the original high res mxf media.

Anyone have experience with this workflow? Thanks in advance.

You'd need one of the MXF direct importers- Calibrated, MXF4Mac, DVFilm, etc.- truth be told I don't see why you want to send a very low res proxy. Why not just digitize at full DVCPROHD and then FedEx a hard drive to your editor. 2TB HD is a few hundred and you get that back in FedEx when the editor is done. Unless you're talking about zero budget this is a lot easier to deal with than the hassle of all that media reconnecting/resize effects, etc. Don't make it harder than it needs to be. Offline/proxy is not the answer in 2011.

Thanks for response. My editor is now living internationally. I sent him a box last week, it was 2 pounds and it cost me $98 USD for fedex. Then I have to pay the import taxes as well. Its the only way to get it to him guaranteed.

With that, do you have experience with anyone being more favorite than the other software? Calibrated seems like the most popular choice for native editing but will it also export the mxf to proxy video clips as well?

Well basically you'd media manage in FCP to the proxy format- and then media manage back when you get the final edit. So yes- it's definitely doable. I've heard best results with MXF4Mac. I think they all offer demos.

Thanks Noah. The Avid workflow is pretty cool. You can import as native mxf and then export as 15:1 or 35:1 in mxf for proxy. A 750mb file gets dropped to 5mb at 35:1 and the video looks like crap but its more than enough to edit. They retain the same file names and all metadata and time code as well. After the proxy gets edited, you can reconnect the media to the high res and be done. I'm trying to find a similar FCP option just like this.

Yup and you could do the same exact thing in FCP with an MXF importer and Media Manager. Just saying it's more hoops to jump through compared to staying online the whole time. But to each his own.
