How do you create mpeg movies?

I know is may sound basic, but I'm getting a bit confused between exporting with QT conversion, and making mpegs. Is that the same thing? Can anyone give me the steps, starting from a clip in FCP timeline. A client gave me a mini DV tape, and asked me to make a few mpeg clips from it. Basically, they'd like to treat them like files in their own computer. I'm in FCP 5.04 Thanks.

I create mpegs using Compressor

File > Export > Using Compressor...

Click on Presets

Click on the + (plus) sign and select MPEG-1

Could can modify quality settings below (Encoder)

Close the window (and save)

From Preset menu select the setting you just created

Click on Submit.

The DV codec, and many other available codecs, are both Mac and Windows compatible. The only time you'll run into problems is with DVCPro (and I think only DVCPro HD to be exact). So you could digitize those files at their native DV resolution and give your client Quicktime movies at the DV resolution and they will be able to play them back with Quicktime player on any machine they might have. That would preserve the quality better than having to go down to an MPEG codec (much heavier compression). Though perhaps they don't really know what they want (if they did, they should have provided a spec sheet). Anyway, good luck.

cheers.
