How do you achieve this shot?

Hi everyone, I'm curious as to how one would go about getting a nice sped up time lapse shot while also moving the camera smoothly?

http://vimeo.com/45872334 The sort of shot I'm talking about is 13 seconds in and another shot of the same type is at 7:07. There are also multiple shots in this video as well (including the very first shot).

I've not had very much experience at all with time lapse shooting, but I think these shots are really stunning. Am I correct to assume they did this with video cameras? Do they use some sort of dolly rig?

Any cool details are much appreciated! Thanks!

No, timelapses these days are best done using a still camera with an interval timer.

Do they use some sort of dolly rig?

Some sort of rig, yes. The first video you linked is likely a slider with a slow motor (or equivalent) pulling the carriage. The second video, being just pans (at least that I saw, didn't watch it all) could have been something as simple as the camera rigged on a cheap wind-up kitchen timer.

would it also be possible to use photos but manually position each picture in the frame to create a faux-camera trucking look?

Are you saying pan and tilt in post? Yes, that is one advantage of using a stills camera - high enough resolution to accomplish reframing/camera moves in post.

Thanks for the input, everyone. One more question though. For anyone who does this type of time lapse shot: what is the workflow process after you get the images taken? Do you process them in photoshop (i feel like that would take an incredible amount of time)? Also, what program do you use to create the video? Premiere Pro? After Effects?

Thanks again

I edit in Sony Vegas, so I would start by importing all of the images into a timeline ( Vegas has a function to do this, I am guessing that most other NLEs will have one too ), so I could then treat them as high-resolution video.

Workflow depends on how you shoot them (jpg or RAW) and what you need to do to them (remove flicker/post track zoom etc). The easiest workflow is to import in After Effects as a pic sequence and rescale, retime and do whatever you like in there. Lots of tutorials all over the net.
