How do they get such quality video on You Tube?

My guess is it's as much to do with the original source material as it is compression. Starting with at lest $50,000 studio cameras and recording my guess to HDCam sure doesn't hurt. Other than that, my guess (and that's all it is) is it's a high bitrate H.264.

I've found that youtube doesn't work well with H.246 files but high bitrate WMV works very well.

The compression doesn't look like anything special for youtube. A lot of times with high production value video we tend to overlook compression issues because the content looks very good and we are drawn to that. That's why the last thing people should be worrying about is their equipment but rather they should be concentrating on content and production value first.

Garbage in, garbage out.
If footage is good then the result will be excellent.
CS4 and 5 have a good preset for YouTube.
I prefer wmvHD.

I find that I get good results with H.264 in an F4V container through AME.

I render and export a losslessly compressed master file out of After Effects or Premiere Pro and then use Adobe Media Encoder to create an F4V movie, using two-pass encoding.

That's how I encoded the After Effects 1.1 demo reel for posting on YouTube.
