How do store your tripod head?

I have a Manfrotto 519 head. Before I put it back in its bag I always unload
the spring tension for the tilt. I am trying to save the internal spring. Am I wasting
my time doing this?
 
i have a Vinten Vision 3 and i had a tech from Vinten tell me to dial back the drag when not using. it also states this in there detailed literature but not very obviously.

"Me too". I have always stored my tripod heads with friction reduced to minimum to avoid potential long term damage to the drag system.

Why not? It's advised by the manufacturer (certainly Vinten and Sachtler), and it doesn't take any time.
 
Traditionally, you'd always make sure that the pan and tilt locks are unlocked so that if the head was knocked in transit (either in a case or not) the inner bearings wouldn't be affected. I always keep the pan handle loose as well.
