How do I Start up FCP7 from External drive

How can I set up an external hard drive for FCP7 and Snow Leopard
~ so I can update my computer to Mountain Lion (or even Dandelion)
~ and not lose capacity to edit complicated ongoing FCP7 projects.


Would just Snow Leopard and FCP7 alone on an external drive do it?
How can I best set up and copy across to external drive?

I wouldn't think that one would waqnt to change any major components when in the middle of an important project.

Why would you want to go to Mountain Lion already? It's mostly a preview for developers and the support for most apps isn't even there yet. If you want to create an external boot disk or partition for playing around with Mountain Lion- here's how-
