How do I relink proxy files to original files in FCP (dslr newb)

Hello,

Im shooting with a canon 7D, using magic bullet grinder to transcode to prores 422 and prores proxy files; in grinder i chose to add timecode. On the fcp timeline i made my edits using the proxy files, but now i dont know how to relink them to the full prores 422 files, or the original .h264 files. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hopefully the file name of a given camera file will be the same as the relevant file name of the proxy file?

Make a copy of your FCP proxy edit project (add say "full HD" to the project name so you know which is which later). Change the project settings of this copy project to match the camera file settings (presumably 1920 x 1080 frame size).

Control-click (or right-button click with a 2-button mouse) a video clip on the timeline and from the menu choose Reconnect media.

Click the Locate button to navigate to the folder where the relevant camera file is kept (if the camera file name is the same as the proxy file name, final cut shows the file in bold black and greying out the others, recognizing this is the file you want to reconnect). Click-highlight that file and ok this so the timeline clip now takes its reference from this camera file instead of the proxy file. Sometimes FCP automatically makes this new pathway connection with the other files on the timeline if those files are also in the same folder. If not, you will have to manually reconnect the others as previously explained.

Thank you for responding TrueIndigo I appreciate it very much. I followed your instructions but when I click the Locate button to navigate to the folder where the original .h264 is kept, fcp directs me to the proxy file, not the original.

I know this is my own stupidity because i cant imagine this process can be all that difficult.

So to clarify:

1. I make a copy of the project, and give the copy a name that differentiates it from the origial.
2. I change the project settings of the copy project to match the camera file settings. (the copy project already had the 1920 x 1080 frame size chosen)
3. control click on a clip and choose reconnect media
4. click locate and highlight the original file and click ok

From here, FCP should connect to the original file but apply the proxy file edits.

Sorry mate, I didn't write it very clearly.

"fcp directs me to the proxy file, not the original" -- yeh, you need to (manually) navigate to where the camera file is because FCP doesn't know where you want to look and just defaults on the current location of the proxy file, so you have to direct it in the dialogue and tell it to use the camera file instead.

So, when you control click a clip, and choose Reconnect media, click the Locate button, go through the folder hierarchy to the camera file of the same name, highlight it, then click the Connect button. FCP should now use that file as reference for the representation on the timeline (with your proxy cuts). You can test this out on the clip by going through the process again and this time the dialogue will be defaulting on your camera file location, because that is now the default location of the file it is referencing (if you successfully changed it, that is!).

You will probably need to do this separately for every clip. Some people temporarily change the name of the folder(s) which hold the proxy files, so that everything is then showing red on the timeline ("Media off-line"). In that situation, when you reconnect the first clip, FCP may automatically connect all the rest of the files if they are in the same folder -- sometimes. Then rename that proxy folder back to what it was (you may need to use the proxy project in the future).

Hope this helps, cheers.
