How do I pan with time lapse?

I just watched an awesome video shot with the EX1, and several of the scenes were time lapsed with a pan from right to left, and a slow shutter. Obviously some very, very slow mechanized device was used to pan the camera REAL slowly. Also seen in the movie Chronos by Ron Fricke. It is a FANTASTIC movie if you haven't all seen it. Anyway - where can I get a cheap motorized SLOW panning device? Here's that Philip Bloom video that has the pans in it: http://vimeo.com/973337

Although things may have changed, Philip told me that he has shot scenes in 1080, then zoomed in and panned in a smaller resolution like 720 or 480. It works well.

There are motorized devices that can do these pans that are made for telescopes. There are also small motorized dollies that I have seen that cost a few thousand that can dolly and pan for TL, but they aren't cheap. If you just want to pan, investigate telescope tracking pan heads, they can be bought for a few hundred dollars OR just do what Philip does, zoom in and pan in AE, Motion or FCP, etc.

You can also use a dslr with a timer remote shutter to do your time lapse. Shoot at 10megapixel or more and then zoom and crop in post. I found i get amazing results this way.
Also I have been experimenting with a motorised telescope head and it works pretty well. I takes a bit of fiddling but it does work. The one i use is this one. You can power it with aa batteries and it is strong enough to support a bare hvx.

i have the telescope motorised pan head ,have not shot anything with it yet. but it is cool. i had to make a little L bracket for the camera to sit on,and clamp to hold he button down but it is cool. slow as you need to go.
