not sure how exactly most do it but I take a small clip and export them as frames or something like that. Play with the export options, it's easy to figure out.

From there select tiff then go into the Tiff options (should be a button to click on) and change the colors to millions + and the compression option to uncompressed - should give you a pretty raw image file (1.3 megs usually) from there you can tweak it how you like in Photoshop and compress it down.

Under File > Export > Using Quicktime Conversion you can kick out stills from your footage in Final Cut Pro. This Final Cut Pro tutorial explains in detail.

if the still frame is from a shot with fast motion (someone runnning) it could still come out shaky.
for quick stills, I like to use the capture widget. It will save an image to your desktop and name it screenshot.

but shakey is not interlaced --- sounds like you're talking about motion blur -- what am I not getting? I never deinterlace stills from 24pa footage on my 23.98 timeline ... ?

Still say it makes no sense unless Walter Graff was assuming most people would be exporting 60i footage (not around here though)

A deinterlace filter depends on deinterlaced fields to interpret and do its magic. There are no interlaced fields in a progressive frame - so A) what's it going interpret and B) what's it going to do if it could interpret anything?
Ok here's a frame with motion blur and without the deinterlace filter:

Looks identical to me.
Motion blur is part of the captured image and I don't see how applying a deinterlace filter would remove it anymore that in would remove the nose on your actor's face -- sorry but I just don't get it. A progressive frame has no interlacing and IS already a still image and I see no more reason to apply a deinterlace filter to it than you would a still from a digital camera.
Now if you shoot 60i then you have to deinterlace because -- well it's interlaced -- hence the "i" in 60i, or if you get one of the frames that is interlaced from 24p on a 29.97 timeline (in other words not 24pa), but why export that frame when the frame to the left or right of it will be progressive scan ... ????

De-interlacing is a relic from 60i video which has no useful purpose in the world of progressive, and will do nothing good for your shots. It will only serve to cut the resolution.
If you're exporting a frame from a 24p or 30p sequence, you should not be de-interlacing. If you're exporting a frame from a 60i sequence, or for some reason you're exporting a split-frame from a 24p sequence, and it shows interlacing artifacts, then de-interlacing can of course clean up the appearance substantially. But a progressive frame already looks better than the best de-interlacing would ever hope to accomplish, and de-interlacing a progressive frame will just harm the resolution.

One on topic note: When choosing a frame you wish to make into a still... if there is motion in the shot, your monitor picture may look fine, but upon export it ends up blurry. If you are hooked up to a tv, you will see how the final pic will export. This is merely a time saver from frustration.

all i know is from my experience. although the freeze frame may look good on the computer, doesn't mean it won't jitter on the tv. the deinterlace filter on fcp takes the jitter away, even from a shot done in 24p
freeze frame,maybe sure, never tried to deinterlace a progressive shakey freeze frame -- the wavy line you get sometimes from progressive footage on a TV is becaus the footage is actually too high a resolution for the TV, so if you use deintrelace for that on a progressive frame you are just hurting the resolution
but anyway this was a thread on how to get good still GRABS (I think) not make freeze frames for viewing on a TV, which could be the source of the confusion.

just a thought -- if you are editing 24p on a 29.97 timeline then yes there are some interlaced frames still do to the telicine -- but 24pa on a 23.98 has no interalcing at all.
24p on 29.97 will show interlacing on a computer but not on a Televsion monitor and Graeme Nattress recomends that you don't deinterlace the pulldown frames because again - hurts your resolution and you will never know they are there on a TV monitor.
