Hello,
When I was shooting I forgot to tell my audio person how I was going to shoot my doc and he wasn't able to get great audio for every interview and scene.
I only have camera audio now.
How can I make it sound good for my short film?

thanks!

1) Subtitles.
2) ADR (dialog replacement, i.e. re-record the dialog in "lip sync" with the video)
3) Voice-over translation. See if you can find someone with a thick foreign accent. :-)

Seriously, there is nothing practical you can do to actually "improve" the existing audio track.

... ;~)

You can't ask a question like than here and expect an "answer".
A) nobody knows what your "camera audio" sounds like.
And
B) What exactly did you need to tell your audio person? Or maybe Why not?

I don't know but I have done a few docs and what exactly were they recording that you weren't shooting?

So it may already sound "good" and if it doesn't there is not a lot you can do to make it sound "good".

Good is in quotes because what you mean by good is probably not what I consider "good".

IF you are more specific about what you have and what you want to end up with you might get some useful info. But be warned that the useful info may be "learn from your mistake".

To echo above.

A VERY skilled post audio person might be able to use filters and EQ to get it to the point that it's just "bad" as opposed to "totally ruins the film".
Since it's a doc your best option (ADR and foley the whole film) probably isn't possible.

Just like onboard flash, on board audio should never be used. No matter what you do its always going to sound or look like it was the on board offereing. You can get audio off board and sync in post for as little as $100 with something like a Zoom H1. But other than that, you are stuck with what you have.

OP,

There have been a bunch of "reshoot", "ADR", your hosed type of responses.

You have to take all of that with a large dose of salt. Since nobody here has heard your on camera audio those comments are largely pointless showboating.

It might be awful and you do need to reshoot, ADR etc but we don't KNOW that at this point. It's also possible that is fine or close enough for what you are doing.

You kind of opened your self up by the way the question was posed but you are kind of getting hammered for it and that is both unfair and possibly bad advice.

So post some samples or better explain what you have and what you hope to end up with.
You really will get some good useful advice.
