so if letterbox is better than squeezemode (because the squeeze is digitally done in the camera) then how do i make a DVD for widescreen?

do i simply tell my NLE (Liquid Edition) to make it 16:9 or do i make a 4:3 timeline, crop the bars and re-import that footage into a 16:9 timeline?

the pic should be 720 horizontal in any case, shouldn´t it? cos when i export a frame from squeeze it tells me in phtotohsop that frame is 1024 wide!
i am lost with all this. i hope the 4:3 broadcast-age is soon over....

but then, I think that's exactly what the squeeze mode is for. It's a small difference to the 16:9 crop but at least it'll make making anamorphic dvd's easier. so when you place in squeeze mode material into the dvd, it'll automatically unsqueeze itself natively as 16:9 instead of reimporting the 16:9 crop into 16:9 timeline and stretching it after.

But im not too sure about -liquid edition-

also don't know about liquid edition, but this is what I would do in vegas. Open a new project, or change project properties to a widescreen template. Then use the crop feature and set it to 16:9, it will now stretch your footage vertically so that the black bars dissapear. You would then render this out as a 16:9 mpg 2 and your set.

need to try this. squeeze is no problem at all as Liquid recognizes the 16:9 and makes it a 16:9 timeline and DVD on the fly (you can burn the DVD from the timeline, which is cool).

i need to see how it will make a 16:9 DVD out of a 4:3 timeline. i probably need to go for a 3rd party authoring tool again.

thanks guys.

I've been using Liquid for a while and had the same questions. Finally after searching around, I found the following information:

This is retyped from the Pinnacle webboard.
-Log your clips in the correct aspect ratio i.e. 16:9 for widescreen footage and 4:3 for standard aspect ratio.
-Set control panel>site>system settings>video display to the correct aspect ratio you want to output your video in.
-Place clips on the timeline and do any editing you require.
-For the clips that are in the wrong aspect ratio go into 2D editor. To change 4:3 clips to 16:9 without stretching, use the "size" tool and multiply by 133%. This gets rid of the black bands at each side. Your image is now bigger top and bottom than your screen, so use the "position" tool to "crop" the image to the area you want. It also works in reverse. The reduction percentage is 75%.

This does work, I've done a small test from footage shot with a GL-1 in 4:3 mode and it looked pretty good. I'm not sure if it will look better than the 16:9 squeeze mode in the camera, you would need to do some tests to determine. I have a DVC80 that doesn't have that option, so on my next project I am thinking about shooting in "letterbox"mode and then using the above tips to make 16:9 output. I haven't done a test yet, but hope to in the next month or so. Hope this helps. Post what kind of results you get.

Cheers,

Stoney
