all right guys ...

I have not yet understood sound clearly ..
I have been trying to clear out the concpet bt I am getting nowehre ... I have done all the sarches possible so now i post ...

Project - Entire project will be done through ADR

I need to record only ambient sound on site ... what setup should i use ..

I was planning on a standard mic connected to a cheap DAT recorder .. Would that be suffiecient

For the ADR , I am getting a studio ( soundproof ) , but I would need to use my on mic .. I am leaning towards Senheiser .. does anyone have any suggestions in the range of 400-500$ >>>

hi neighbor :-)

look for some stereo mic or 2 cardioids if you intend run stereo ambient
it may vary to other paterns if you need catch sound from the distance then shotgun pattern would be better choise .
if you ill use the same microphone for adr look for quit flat pattern so you will be able to shape the dialog more easily .
what exactly the locations you are going to shoot , is it desert or urban ?

by the way , if you rnning 200 if i remeber corectly , you can go directly to the camera , it would be the same as dat

Well ..

Locations are urban .. I want to use stereo ambient ..
that's pretty clear ..

any suggestion for what mic i should use for clear ADR

you can go qwith apair of octavas for the ambient ( you willn need wind protection and stereo bar + aditional large diafragma head for adr
if you have good preamp you will be good , during the adr , you will be able place the secend mic on adistance and capture abot differnt sound so it may help you with sound pespaective match up .

Rather than a cheap DAT recorder, take a look at some of the newer solid state recorders. For the price of an entry level DAT like the Tascam DA-P1, you can get something like a Fostex FR-2 (24-bit, 192 kHz, timecode).

for ambient you dont need tc and frankly i dont see any problem run good preamp only to the camera directly
the preamps on dap-1 are crime :-)

I recently bought a Zoom H4 Handy Recorder for about $250.

http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4/index.php

I bought it primarily because I didn't like the idea of lugging a $3,000 camera around when I needed to do voice overs or record sound effects. It is both a stereo and 4-track, with line in, ¼" inputs, and XLR inputs as well. I haven't spent much time with the 4-track portion of it, though it is pretty damn impressive in its capabilities there, with lots of built in effects, mic emulators and whanot.

But the stereo recorder works better than I would have hoped. I've experimented with an MK012, an AKG perception 200 (for VO) as well as a pair of AT853a's, all of which have given suprisingly good results. Your recording formats can be either .mp3's (of just about any needed sampling rate) and 16 and 24 bit depth samples at 44.1, 44, and 96k.

The only draw back so far is that you can not record in mono only. even with one mic hooked up, you are still running stereo. But, it runs on two AA batteries and has 24 and 48 volt phantom power (it also has a DC adapter) as well as a limiter and compressor.

For the amount I paid for it, I'm very pleased. there is NO timecode generator, but as I do not need one, that's just fine.

It's a hell of a little unit, and with the 30 dollar investment of a 2 gig card, you can record a lot of time, even at the higher settings. Hook it up via standard USB and it looks like a jump drive, with a simple drag to the desktop for file transfer.

It can also be used as a direct line in via USB for mics and instruments, but I've not yet needed to do that. That's what Firepods are for anyhow.

It's a great little thing, and well worth the investment. nothing else in the price range comes close.

EDIT: Just saw the Zoom thread

Sheesh. Before I get it, yeah, i'm a n00b. :)

like the look of that H4, was also wondering if you could use it with a lavalier as a poor mans wireless mic. i know you wouldn't be able to monitor the sound levels as your filming & would have to sync to the footage in my nle but already having a countryman b6 & struggling to afford the sennheiser g2, maybe this could be used to get reasonable sound in some of my run & gun type music feasrtival documentaries I'll be doing this summer where i'll be following a presenter guy around. Sorry if i've gone off on a bit of a tangent & hijacked the thread

I'm sure you could, if you could find an adapter for them. Or, you could possibly find some smaller mics and hook those up. This is the size of it, and I do not have large hands. :)

And I don't think this is hijacking a thread, since the author was looking for a "cheap DAT", and this certainly fits the bill. It's not the greatest audio unit, but its a great bargin and saves camera wear.

A couple questions:

Have you ever ADR'ed before? Will you have a sound engineer with that studio? How are you capturing the guide track? How was the decision to ADR whole film arrived at?

If you are confident of this workflow then you don't have to bother answering but a audio newbie annoucing he is ADR'ing whole film is generally a pretty big red flag warning.

Cheers

I personally have zero experience with sound .. but I do have sound engineer who records for local bands here .. has a lot of hands on experience .. but everyone seems to have their own workflow ...

ADR is the only way to go because in my region sync sound is not accepted .. but he did ask me to purhase a DAT recorder for ambient and a mic for the VO ..

any suggestion for the studio mic ..

And guys .. Thanx for the info defitely gettin that DAT recrder

and you didnt answer how you are recording your guide tracks. how you gonna do that? you realise that if the talent speaks while your stereo recorder is running a little way away, the audio you record will be useless for ambient AND for dialogue.

just a thought.

ADR and music are two completely different beasts. Experience in one does not neccessarily prepare one for the other.

why on earth is sync sound not accepted? it is in every other part of the planet. im curious.

Spaghetti Westerns, older European cinema, and a lot of Bollywood features ADR the whole picture and have a distinct lipsync offset look. To those that are use to it, I guess it is fine. Most of Western culture can't tolerate it unless their is Kung Fu going on at the same time.

I haven't noticed obvious ADR in the little Arab cinema I have seen but I am often too distracted by the subtitles to say for sure :)

The advice has been to avoid DAT and get a file based recorder. DAT is dead and overpriced compared to comparable features in NL recorders. Of course DAT is also extremely fragile compared to file based systems. Avoid DAT unless absolute necessary for compatability reasons.

Cheers
