How do I get a 2 hour project out as an .avi file????

Hey everyone. I have the latest FCP (5.1.2) and I have the full version compressor that will let me quicktime convert to avi file format.

BUT, it only does 12 minutes of my 2 hour project. What am I doing wrong???

Plus, my VTR firewire connection is VERY TEMPERMENTAL. Sometime it connects to FCP, sometimes it doesn't. What's going on here???

It's aggravating when you buy expensive stuff because you don't want to cheap out so that you don't run into these kind of stupid problems. Sorry, I'm venting a little. Help a brotha out.

How are you trying to export? Do you have any ins and outs on your timeline? Do you export directly to Compressor or are you exporting as a stand-alone file first?

Why go to AVI???

VTR firewire -- buy a new cable? Are you sure it's the connection? Must be on when you start FCP for it to connect...

So many questions I have for you!

Thank you so much for responding so quickly!

I'm ONLY going to .avi because I'm not editing the piece. A pc user is and they requested the raw stock on hard drive as an .avi file.

I don't put ins & outs on my timeline. I just assumed it would export the entire timeline if I didn't specify.

Yeah, the firewire thing.....You do have a point about it notifying me when starting FCP, BUT when I go into "Log & Capture," it sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. Sometimes I switch from the front of my Quad G5 to the back. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.
I just have found out what it is that is making it work sometimes, and not working other times.
I appreciate you helping me out!

The Quicktime exporting of .avi seems to do as good a job as it can, but like .mov it's simply a wrapper for video and audio of a variety of codecs. I know that premiere creates avi files for captured footage but taking .avi's in that were created from Quicktime are hit or miss. I would recommend exporting as Quicktime with in DV or whatever you're using and importing that into whatever editor they're using. Again it's hit or miss as to whether it'll take or not, but it's worth a try.

Also if your ins and outs are fine and it still won't encode the whole length, why don't you split the raw footage up into clips and takes and export them seperately?
