How do I do this?

I want to take text, like this:

font_start.jpg

and modify it to look like this:

font_final.jpg

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Larry

Do you use Photoshop?

If so, you can add those effects by double clicking the text layer to open the "layer style" box. There you can add shadows, embossing, outlines, and all manner of other potentially cheesy effects :)

(Probably not the "right" way to do it, but I am not a Photoshop guy.)

Upon some experimentation, looks like these are the filters you need:

Drop Shadow
Color Overlay
Gradient Overlay
Stroke

Maybe that helps...

That should do it, provided it is text, and not just a layer with everything on it. If that were the case he would need to extract the writing and that could lead to some nasty artifacting. And he wouldn't need Color overlay, Gradient overlay with red and black should do it. But good call.

Hey Larry, what font is that?

Whoops, right you are.

Oh, and my guess is that the font is called "Whitechapel." :)
Don't ask me where I got that from - it just came to me.

Thanks for the help guys. I figured it would be in those settings, I just wasn't sure which of the myriad to use and before I started a trial-and-error process that could go on for a long period of time, I'd see if you one you guru's here could point me in the right direction. Guess I was right :)

And, yes, Matt that font is called "Whitechapel". Cost $20, but it is the very letter style I've had in mind for a film title for a couple years so I couldn't pass it up.

Thanks again for the help.

My guess would be this-
1) create the text
2) using your gradient/paint bucket tool to create a multi color background on a new layer
3) using your magic wand tool on the text layer, selecting everything that isn't the text
4) switch back to your multicolored layer, and hit delete. This will remove everything but the letters
5) invert your selection, and stroke it
6)create your dropshadows
7) bask in the glory of your creation
