How do I create a timelapse of normal lenght footage in vegas?

Hi,

I shot about ten minutes of footage on an ex1r and I want to compress it down to about 10 seconds. The problem is that Vegas seems to put limits on how much I can reduce the clip to.

I could do this easily in premiere or fcp but need to edit this one on a laptop in Vegas Pro 9.

Maybe I am just too new to Vegas to know what I am doing.

Cheers

Here's one way you can do it. I have Vegas 7 though but maybe there's a better way in V9 .
This idea is to render an image sequence while setting your Step Time to a high number.

For example, to convert 10 minutes footage to 10 seconds:

frame_rate * seconds = max_frames
so for 10 minutes @ 23.976 you have about 14385 frames.

10 seconds yields about 240 frames.

So the Step Time would be about 14385/240 = 60 for this example.

------

In Vegas 7 here's the steps you would take:

Your File->Properties should probably have rendering quality set to 'Best'.

1/ Set your Ruler Format to 'Absolute Frames'.
MenuBar->Options->Ruler Format->Absolute Frames.

2/ I always like to make sure I have the timeline set to 'Quantize to Frames'.
MenuBar->Options->Quantize To Frames.

3/ Open the Render Image Sequence Dialog...
MenuBar->Tools->Scripting->Render Image Sequence.

In V7 it looks like this...
Vegas7ImageDialog.jpg

Set your save path,
File Names: I prefer the Image_000 format.
Leave your Start and Stop time. They must be whole numbers, no decimals.
Step Time should also be a whole number. If not your Ruler Format probably isn't set to 'Absolute Frames'.
Step Time should be set to render one frame every this number of frames.
So 60 would be one frame for every 60.

Hit Okay.

------

To load in the sequence when done, go to 'File->Import Media'
and select the first frame of the sequence and in the Dialog Box click the little
check box that sais 'Open Still Image Sequence'.

It'll import it as a video clip.
And you should be good to go.

Hopefully Vegas 9 isn't too different.

Wow Gord.T,

Thanks heaps for the detailed post. i will definitely try that in V9.

Since posting I found a tutorial that, through a laborious process, reduced the clip then rendered it then reduced it again and so on. It worked but took quite a long time with the multiple renderings and re-importings. It was effective but a bit painful actually.

I have some other clip where I want to do the same thing and I will be trying your way for sure.

Thanks

I also wanted to say thanks, I didn't even know I could export an image sequence. I just tried in in Vegas movie studio platinum 10 HD (it's under Project, Render as, Image sequence) and it works, so that may come in useful.

That's probably how they create those fake HDR videos.
Render out an image sequence, then batch all the images through photo shop to create the fake HDR look. Then import them back into Vegas at 30 FPS and match the audio back up.

I might have to try that!

Hi,

I've found your post regarding exporting images from a footage in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 10 . I am really straggling to find out how to configure export, to be able to export, for example every 60th frame - to create time lapse. If you could let me know how did you do it I would be most grateful.
