How do I connect a wireless microphone to my P2 camera?

3 month P2 user. Shot a lot of local events and made a lot of mistakes. Sound quality (lot of ambient noise) not great. Can you recommend a shot-gun microphone for the camera? I also purchased an Azden pro reciever and transmitter. How do I attach it to the camera? Suggestions?

The conventional wisdom is that you want to mike your source as closely as possible. That makes event videopgraphy particularly difficult as you are now discovering. Personally, I like Sennheiser mikes. The ME66/K6 is a very popular item. I have several and every so often you can find some nice eBay bargains. Better is a boom pole operator handling that pole with your shotgun mike.

While more expensive (considerably), the Sennheiser 416 has (at least to my tin ear) a much better sound quality than the ME66. Shot with one this summer under some terrible conditions and it gave me lots of good audio with which to work.

Don't know which Azden you bought, but if it is a lower end mike, you might want to consider a little better wireless system. I have the Sennheiser G2 system, which also has a wireless transmitter for XLR mike. You could always have that on your shotgun on the boom.

Check out the frequencies used by TV stations in your area (it's on the Sennheiser site) and buy the G2 version where you will have the least possibility of interference (they come in A, B, and C frequency ranges). If your budget is a lot higher, consider a Lectrosonics.

Audio is important. Very important. Viewers will forgive bad picture more easily than bad audio (not that your video should be bad, but I hope you know what I mean).

If in doubt about mikes, rent for a shoot. Rental on mikes is usually very cheap. That will let you play with the mikes and learn their characteristics. I like the ME66 because it seems to be very hot, allowing me to use less gain on the camera.

Meanwhile, just hook XLR cable from your Azden to your HVX.

I use the ME66 a lot, and also the Azden wireless products. All of the Azdens output via a stereo mini plug, but Azden also has an adaptor that goes from stereo mini to two XLRs for the HVX. You could also fabricate one pretty easily.
