How Do I Break A Feature Film Into Sections On FCP

I am capturing my first feature shot on the 100A. I have about 12 hours of footage on 17 tapes. So far I have captured one and a half (whew!)

What I have heard is that it is important to break it into sections. The last film I worked on (shot on super 16mm) I know the editor broke it into thirds. My question is, how do I do that? In other words, do I create three project bins? Or do I just create three sequences within the same project? And when it's ready for output, how do you out put it and link all the sequences?

Thanks!

Just create 3 sequences in the same project. When they're ready, you can nest each one and then combine them all in the same sequence.

I usually have a bin for each scene as broken down on the script. If there are numerous scenes that connect to each other quickly I may bunch them together ie- someone travelling all over a house going into different rooms.

I then do the same thing sequence-wise. Whatever feels most comfortable. If scene 1 is 5 minutes, it'll probably have it's own sequence. If scene 2-10 are 5 minutes combined, I'd probably group them together. For a 90 minute feature I might end up "nesting" 20 to 30 sequences together for the Whole movie sequence.

By doing it in smaller sections, it makes it way easier to access what you want. If you have to look through the entire movie which may be over 1000 different cuts to find one cut you want to change it'll be time consuming and stressful. Smaller, tighter sections will ease the post production process.

I'd also keep scenes and sequences that cross dissolve together.

Good luck with the editing, from the stills you've shown us this is looking good!

Thanks for that! That makes a lot of sense and will start dropping some bins in. Never really realized what the "bins" were for but I think I can see why now....

I just posted a couple more shots in the grabs and will get a mock trailer up ASAP. Thanks for the help and compliments!
