Hi all
shot an interview today using two camera's (Sony and Panasonic)

When I import the AVCHD files into Davinci 14, I end up with multiple .mts files from each camera.

How do I combine the Sony .mts files into one (and likewise for the Pany) so I can then align the two resulting files and edit?

many thanks

Dennis, thank you for your help; that worked :)

Now, I have another issue; the Sony has a 30 min rec limit, so I had a short break for the talent to have a drink at the 30min mark and then pressed record on the Sony again. The Panasonic can record for several hours so I left that running.

I made one compound clip of the first four Sony .mts files and a second compound clip of the other 2 .mts files (six Sony .mts files in total).
I also made a compound clip of the two Panasonic .mts files.

I then tried to make a multicam clip from the three compound clips using SOUND for sync but DaVinci returns an error. Both cameras have very good audio.

I slated the first take but not the second.

How would you suggest I sync the clips so I can easily cut from one camera angle to the other.

Cut the panasonic clip and synchronize the first half with your first sony compound clips. And the second panasonic half with the second compound sony clip. Then make two multicam clips.

I tried the advice from "Publimix" but DaVinci could not sync the compound clip (the scratch audio is very good quality)

Yes I had that problem too, you have to sync the clips before you make compound clips. So sync son clip 1 wit panasonic, and then sync sony clip 2 with panasonic, then make one compound clip.

I'm lost :(

The interview was in two 30min parts- the Sony camera had to be restarted after 30mins, the Panasonic recorded for the full interview without restarting.
The Sony has six .mts files; the Panasonic has two .mts files

I have slated twice (because I had to re-start the Sony)

The second slate happens at the start of the 5th Sony file; but it occurs half way through the 2nd Panasonic file

Can someone please explain, step-by step, how I join the Sony files and then sync to the Panasonic.

What I highly recommend you do first is convert all your MTS files to a nice high quality and NLE-crash-proof format like ProRes 422... then use those files in DaVinci editor.

Take it a step further, after you have everything converted to ProRes 422 download the free 30 day trial of PluralEyes and import all your camera tracks to it accordingly, as well as any separate audio track you recorded and hit the "sync" button. this will automatically sync all your footage using the audio and it will account for any gaps too and what you'll be left with is all your footage from different cameras perfectly sync'd up. Next you export the sync'd tracks as XML and now you can import that XML file into practically any NLE you want. Then you can easily do your multi-cam view editing from there.

I actually think Pluraleyes can convert MTS to ProRes but it might crash so try it if you like but you might just be better off converting MTS to ProRes 422 one file at a time with some online utility I'm sure you can find if you search.

Cheers

Dennis
thank you for your reply.

I was hoping to salvage some of the editing I've already done inside of DaVinci, but it seems I have to go back to square one.(I can't work out how to sync on the second clapper mark. I've tried making two new compound clips by trimming the first compound clips and making a new multicam but it's not syncing correctly. Also, I made optimised media to allow me to edit on this ancient computer)

well to keep your existing edit just drag your new ProRes versions of the videos to your media pool, go to edit tab, then relink the clips manually. It should work fine.
