How did they do this in Inside Man?

In the interrigation scenes in The Inside Man, the lighting is wonderful. It kind of reminds of me a technique in CGI called bloom lighting. It's striking in that not only are there brights that blow out and some dark blacks but, rather than having a lot of contrast that tends to come with such things, everything is very soft. It gave the scenes a very surreal feeling. Does anyone know how they accomplished this? And dare I ask, is it an effect i could possibly replicate in some form of color correction (I realize this is HIGHLY unlikely but I can dream can't I?)?

Weren't the interviews bleach bypassed? At any rate, I know parts of it were, at least according to AC, and nothing else looked like it was.

Libatique shot it on chrome stock, than the film was cross processed (meaning instead of developing with chemicals for reversal film he used "negative" film chemicals) than it was bleached-bypassed. THe stock was daylight film but he used it under Tungsten lighting hence the very warm feel. I think he also used a diffusing filter. There's a great softness in the charaters faces.

This young DP is no joke. I think there are many plug-ins to get this effect in FCP

I haven't gotten my AC for April yet, but yeah, it looked just like bleach bypass to me, obviously with desaturated production design to begin with and Matty Libatique's damn good eye for lighting and composition. But yeah, as far as I know, there are some ways to get this look going on in post. I'm sure magic bullet has a preset, it's worth checking out.
Peace,
