Can we work with beta footage within vegas ?
How do we get the video into the computer ?
Will the clarity of working with beta be preserved within the vegas timeline ?
If DV is 720x576 Pal then what is betas resolution when edited on a computer ?
Is beta analogue or digital in format ? It also records to tape right ? But is it 1s and 0s ? or analogue ?

beta tapes are analogue ..

to capture you can buy a decklink card then capture thru Vegas using sony YUV codec ....

or you find somebody that has a decklink ( mac or pc) and have them capture it - if mac captured it you will recieve .mov ( QT) files .. if PC and they didn't use Vegas they will be AVI's using blackmagic codec - either way you'll need to download the free blackmagic codec from decklink ...

or find somebody with Avid and have them capture using meridian codec - you then download free meridian codec from avids site ...

all above methods capture beta uncompressed 4:2:2 ...

or you capture going out the beta deck into a DV box/camera into your computer - files would then be DV 4:1:1

capturing uncompressed 4:2:2 retains the quaility of beta SP ... you do loose some going to DV 4:1:1 .. you really have to view them side by side to see difference .. betaSP to DV looks very good ..

depending on my use- i'll either just have the beta copied over to dv/dvcam ( $30 hr LA ) or i'll have a post house capture to hard drive ( $200hr in SF area)

But what are the resolutions we will end up with with either if these methods ? Or is it decided by the capture settings that we give ?

i don't have any beta SP uncompressed here at home ... i only have NTSC ..
i do have some digibeta that was captured thru Avid uncompressed - have both 8bit & 10 bit captures ... the 8 & 10 bit files are 720x486 .. Vegas cannot read the 10 bit clips ...i did make a copy of same digibeta to DVcam ... dv files are 720x480 ...

when i render for a digibeta SP tape out - i use the blackmagic 8 bit codec with template set to 720x486 ... i then take the hard drive to a post house and they transfer files from my drive to their mac drives and then use FCP go to betaSP .. if you hand them 720x480 clips they have to render them out to 720x486 ( at 200 hr) ...
