How can I use MOD files in Premiere Pro

I have some MOD video files that I want to use in Premiere Pro on an existing 29.97 timeline. PP won't import MOD files. But when I change the file extension from MOD to MPG they play perfect in media player and also import into PP. But they play terribly choppy in PP and export choppy as well. I don't know if its the file incompatibility or if the MOD file framerates are not 29.97. I check the file properties in PP and it lists 29.97 for the MOD files, but don't know if PP converted the files from their original frame rate. So my questions are...

1) How can I use this MOD files in PP?
2) Why do they play perfect in media player on my desktop but terribly in PP?
3) How to I check the native framerate of a MOD or MPG file?

Thanks
Tom

The files you are using are not supported (unsuitable) as edit files by PremPro.

Try something like Virtual Dub to convert them to avi's.
