How Can I Sell Music DVDs? Looking for strategies

As a videographer, I have been shooting bands in clubs and showrooms around town. I suppose I can get hired by the band for a fee, but since most musicians around here can't even afford to buy me a beer, I am looking for other ways to make money.

I know I can sell videos directly to the band so they can turn around and sell. I was also thinking I could produce DVDs to distribute online. But I have no idea how to get started.

First of all, I know nothing of the legal aspects of distributing videos. What kinds of release forms do I need? Do I have a right to sell, for instance, if one of the band members is not in agreement? Are there any standard agreements between performers and videographers? How can both make a profit?

Should I actually burn and package DVDs myself? What equipment do I need? What about distribution sites like Indieflix.com and lulu.com? I am not talking thousands of copies, although it's possible. But enough to make a few bucks. At what point am I overstepping my bounds?

Is anyone else doing something similar?

You absolutely need to consult a lawyer.

But two major things to keep in mind: 1) Generally, the PERFORMERS own the rights to the performances; you won't be able to do anything without their consent. 2) The SONGWRITERS own the rights to the music, or the rights have been assigned to another entity; you need to license the rights in order to distribute recordings of the music.

thanks for that tip.

Suppose I do have all the necessary permissions. What distribution plans are out there? If I wanted to act as sort of a talent agent, how can I put my videos to use? What can I offer performers other than a DVD?
