how can I off line edit

I've never done an off line edit, never really needed to but I'd like to know how. Can anyone walk me through the process. I'm using FCP 5.
 
no i don't want my footage to be offline. an offline edit is using lower res to do your edit then re capturing at full res when you are done with the edit. I'm just wondering the best way to do it, let's say with HDV 1080 60i footage. Do I need a capture card to pull this off or can FW basic do it?

To be honest HDV's data rate is so low you'd be better off just buying another hard drive and keeping everything online. The hassle of media reconnection can be quite a pain to deal with vs. one online edit the whole way through.

Offline editing makes a lot more sense when you are working with huge DPX or uncompressed HD files and having the performance and storage space to hold every take is less feasible. HDV is almost offline as it is.

thanks for the info Noah, it will be a long time before I probably ever touch uncompressed HD. this gives me some insight as to how to do it and when you would want to do it. thanks again!
