I really don't know much about prdouction monitors, I got ahold of one (a sony HR trinitron BVM-8021), they cable i was given has two metalic looking ends. Is there an adapter I can buy/rent to output from my laptop and hook it up to the monitor? perhaps a PCMCIA slot converter or something that goes from firewire to the cable the monitor uses?

Canopus makes some excellent inexpensive devices for converting the firewire output into a composite video output and you would only need an RCA to BNC adapter for the monitor.
