How bad of an idea is this...

So I decided I was going to buy a DVX, but I was going to wait for summer. Then I went to my film class last Thursday and found out that instead of taking the final, I could make a 2 - 10 minute movie. I hate tests, so that's the way to go for me, I'm doing a modern adaptation of an Edgar Allen Poe story. Anywho, I decided that since I was going to get a DVX anyway, I would order it and shoot my movie with it. Than I realized (after I ordered it) that it seems extremely complex to shoot with, and having no experience, I may not have enough time to learn with it. It should be here Thursday or Friday and I will be shooting the 20th - 23rd. Do I have enough time, in your opinion? All but one scene will be filmed at night, in "not optimal" lighting. The one upside is that I plan on making it black and white in post, does that cut down some hassle?

Re: How bad of an idea is this...

Black and white in post allows you to push the contrast, as the added grain may give a more old-style look.

Do you actually have *no* experience? None whatsoever? I've found that the DVX is actually one of the easiest fully manual cameras to use...If you're in a film class then I'm assuming you already know the basic rules of composition and the like...so you won't make something completely unwatchable! Finding out where all the doohickies are located on the DVX will be easy as pie, and from there on in it's your skill that will shine through...If you can't make a good looking movie with the DVX, you wouldn't make anything good with any other cameras, either :D DVX is the way to go!

At least you didn't get an XL1 ;)

Agreed.

Surely you know one or two people that may be able to help you on this?

No worries; I'm sure you can do this! Have you a script yet? How many locations? How many actors? What will you edit it on (NLE)?

Nobody I know has a 3ccd camera (of course), but I have been making movies for 2 years, so I know how stuff works. The main problem is this: I just bought a bunch of bad ass equiptment that I've never used, and I'm hoping to be able to figure it out in time. I got the DVX, and I will also be using a lighting kit and shotgun mic on a boom for the first time. I'm sure I can figure it out, I just don't want it to look like I *just* figured it out. (make any sense?) I did however work in an extra day for testing shots and equiptment.

I've got the script pretty much worked out, cleaning up the dialog a little bit, but I have the over all idea. 5 locations. (All of which I have chosen/ mapped out.) 2 actors, its a very simple story. And I use Premier. ****. That's one thing I didn't think of. I have PPro, but I haven't taken the time to learn it, so I'll have to shoot in 30fps and use Premier 6.5 (weak).

I think your final film project should be due 2 weeks after finals, because busting out a short movie while studying for the rest of your classes (and doing the 48 hour film festival this weekend) is not the easiest. (While working as well). Ok sorry, that last sentence was just to gripe. I've got a schedule worked out and I'm tryin desperately to stick with it!

Re: How bad of an idea is this...

You said you'll have to shoot in 30fps...but you won't.

The DVX can shoot in 24P, and add a pulldown automatically to your footage, making it 60i footage that LOOKS like 24P footage. It's the exact same process that film goes through when being transfered to tape, with a 3:2 pulldown.

So just shoot in 24P standard, edit in a 60i (regular settings) timeline, and you'll be fine. It'll look great!
