How about shooting in the EVIL SAND?

I am posting this because I'm about to bring 2 DVX100As to the beach in Southern California.

Having experienced the effect of sand grinding the insides of my still camera, I am horrified by the thought of something similar happening to the DVX.

What is the best (incl. best value) solution for shooting in dust/sand?

Are there any solutions which would allow using the LCD?

Please recommend from your personal experience.

Thank you!

P.S. I noticed the rain post but am not sure a rain cover would (water, lower light) be the best solution on the beach (harsh sun, wind with microcopic evil sand particles in it).

I don't know if anyone manufactures a camera cover designed to keep out sand. I would think a rain cover would be better than nothing.

At the very least, you could take some gaff tape/masking tape/whatever and tape all around the seams of the tape transport door once you have a cassette loaded then use the Wal-Mart/Target/grocery store plastic bag over the top of it with a hole just big enough to poke the lens (and lens shade) through.

That horrible grinding can happen very easily with the DVX. Be very, very careful of sand. It's even more dangerous than the rain.

A little bit of sand in the focus ring, in the zoom, in the tape mechanism and you might be talking some big dollars to fix a dead camera, or grinding problems for the rest of the life of the camera.

Anyway, I wouldn't just trust a rain cover to blowing sand. I would use a rain cover with plastic and rubberbands underneath for added protection.

Re: How about shooting in the EVIL SAND?

.. i spray some sand repellant on my dvx. you can buy it at any grocery store.. i usually get the "land-o-lakes " brand, and smear a generous amount on the lense. lol ,no but if its going to be windy and kicking up dust + snad ..i'd go with terry's suggestion. i would wrap that baby in a clear plastic bag except for the lense, and be sure to have a uv filter or other worthlss filter in front of your glass. if the bag is clear, and loose enough, you should be able to operate it right through the plastic without too much trouble. just dont go for a swim with it.. :)
