How about expanding dvxuser?

I'm talking about a content management system for the main page where the forum can be linked off to but youcan also have a section for links to dvx-shot shorts and what not.. Also, you could use a news engine for latest dvx & related news amongst other film reated news. Even an online store?

What ya think..?

That's Jarred's decsion; how far to take this beast; I'd love to see this become a legitimate filmmaking/DV Technology site; with articles, reviews, previews, and most importantly REVENUE.

I am afraid that would require substantial programming on Jared's part, something I doubt he wants to get into... The site is run by a third-party software (vBulletin), and if that's something that's not built into the software, it's not trivial to do these things.

On the other hand, there could be a simple link to dvxstore.com which could use some other software to handle on-line purchases (what is it the store should be selling, though...). As far as news aggreagators or what not, same thing - different software required.

The good news is it could probably be managed under a single domain name, with virtual hosts defined - I am not sure if the ISP (Server Central Network?) allows virtual hosts on their hosted domains, though.

I also thought that adding genre sections would be cool... something specific for people working on different things like; Music Videos, Documentaries, Horror, Film Noir etc... since each has their own specific discussion topics.

p.s. I'm tight in Coldfusion, MS SQL2000 etc... would be willing to lend a hand :-) My largest application is; www.punkhardcore.com (all CFMX)

I'm of the opinion, "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

This is hands down the best filmmaking web site I have found with the most supportive community.

I would be nervous about changing anything that could mess with that dynamic.

I'm sure that sounds silly, but from my experience, a community like this is a fragile thing and it is surprising how little things can kill it.

I'd have to agree with you Chris. If anything more were to come of this site I'd prefer to see it as a connected stand-alone site, something that would not interfere with the delicate balance of the force.

I kinda like how the community is. Everyone's helpful, it's small... It's a nice DVX family we've got here. If it there's more stuff added, the quality of the BB can get dilluted just like all other BB's that get super-huge and add a bunch of features. I feel the quality of the site would lose it's high integrity if it started expanding.

But that's just me.

I like the community feel here, but I think we could do with an expansion of the clips/screengrabs section. It would cool to have a 24fps clips section, a place where DVX, XL2, the upcoming JVC and HVX, plus any other cameras that shoot 24 can post. At this point the clips/screengrabs is probably the one part of DVXuser that probably makes people feel like they're not welcome.

In addition to a 24fps section, a general section for 30P, 60i, basically all the other variants of video would be cool.

I'm not into the idea of creating sections for genres, I think that'll just split things up and people will end up with less feedback on their posts.

THis site has progressed even in the few months I've been on it. I think there is a natural evolution to these things.

I like that this site is:

1) Unbiased. Everybody has their preferences, but all reasonable points of view are welcome

2) Gracious. What I mean is, it's not like IMDB boards, or any of that crap. There is an air of respect here that I have never found on another (free) board.

I know it sounds selfish, but the bigger this site gets, the greater the risk of losing that. I'd hate to see that happen.

I like what we have also, though the upgrade was sweet, I sensed that you wouldn't want to take it too much further. I'm really not into the DVXwal-mart aproach as I believe that will kill the familly feel that now exist. There is room to make profit of course, but I'd rather that be a spinoff site that rose from the trial and error data of this community and was an independant venture.

I too am still amazed at the level of community, respect and support here. There are all levels of experience here; from high school noobs to seasoned hollywood professionals and everyone participates with the utmost respect; the reality is; the ones that come in too make trouble are usually ran out of town. We're felxible and relaxed but it isn't a free for all.

Lovin this place :)

I think a store function (on a seperate domain) could serve well... selling dvxuser merchandise, batteries, member specials from partner manufacturers, etc. More of an automated central hub for Jarred to start reaping the rewards of founding and supporting this great resource we all benefit from.

I'm still new here, but for what it's worth I think it should stay small. Like you've said it's a community even if I'm over the other side of the pond. It's nice to know you're not going to get shot down (although I am still smarting after the wet towel whipping you gave me about my first post about my camera clunking) if you ask a question. It's a great place to get away from the A**holes in this business.

Unless a section has 30-50 posts a day, splitting it up just spreads people out until you lose critical mass. Communities drive the site, not the other way around. When there is enough sticky content to manage, I am sure Jarred will find a way to do it.

I do agree though, it would be nice to have a sort of "hall of fame" of clips and grabs. Not the comments that follow them, per se, just the media, stored in such a way that they would always be easy to find and refer to.

Chris

Seeing the comments is helpful. The site is already gaining users at a very respectable clip--I think we're doing fine in that department. Since Jarred moved us over to vBulletin, there's been a steady stream of site enhancements and that's going to continue. We have the new articles section and you're going to be seeing some expanded content--with reviews, interviews, and articles. I'm working on a new DVXmovie forum that should make it easier to find finished films.

So I think the general plan is to continue the incremental expansion, but still retain our identity.
