how about a p2 cable

here is an idea. a cable that plugs into the p2 slot on the cam and into the same on a laptop. so instead of the firewire options to laptop, folks who are capturing direct to laptop could use a p2 cable and capture all native modes too. Is that more complicated to do than it sounds. that is what the cineporter is going to do to capture to its hard drive.
just wondering, ( i get a free one if someone makes this right:) )

It won't likely happen. The Cineporter works by acting like a P2 card, so the camera doesn't know the difference. Any cable like you describe would have to work in a similar manner. That is not an easy task, as evidenced by how long it has taken the Cineporter to arrive.

Also, keep in mind that a device like that wouldn't really provide any new function: you can already stream HD out to a laptop via firewire (just not in native mode). The only thing that a special Cardbus device could possibly provide would be the ability to capture to MXF files without using an NLE like Edius to capture with. That would be a nice feature, but the overall cost of the device (which would be incredibly expensive, I'd guess) wouldn't be worth it.

Hey! I have the same idea !!
Just looking for in da net that option...
I think....Put in to HVX200 one PCMCIA card converter to a SATA cable, conected to a SATA portable HARD DISK ! TACHAAAN !! You have 500Gb ready 2 use.
maybe this Harddisk needs to program with P2 format.
I Think it's possible and cineporter maybe use like i say.
Panasonic don't listen the voice of ours ! please cheap the P2 cards !!
If do it this camera will be the real king in da market.
I work in cinema productions and edited with HDV poor system, HDV it's a joke! HDV it's a toy tell you are fool. Really.
....

It's been explained a few times -- the HVX200 does not expect to talk to a hard disk or other mass-storage device, but to a P2 device with a completely different protocol and set of commands.

what we really need is a p2 extension cable so that hot swapping doesnt bump the camera.

yes, but where is the point, you would have to switch off the camera as well to copy down the content, and thats allready what you can do via usb/firewire...or are you dreaming of a cable that makes the p2 a "run-through-device" where actually nothing is saved?

No, he's talking about hot-swapping the cards in a long-form recording. By moving the cable (and hence card-swap point) away from the body of the camera, we could avoid the inevitable "bump" when swapping cards.

Hey !! more imagination... and hacksoul (je je)
If they can do one cineporter.... we do it too!!
When i see cineporter's site i ask if i know what programation use....
because the hardware that use it's really simply, no?

ZUCRE!
