Housecleaner wins U.S. Documentary Directing Award at Sundance

Yep, I met him on Friday in the Filmmaker Lodge and had a good chat for half an hour or so. I had no idea I was sitting with a "winner." :) He's definitely a nice guy, and gives hope to all of us, as not only is he a "nobody" who's now a Sundance winner, but it was also a genuine cold submission. No connections, no inside track.

I've long held the belief that there is no ladder in this industry... you're only as good or bad as your last project. If that guy can repeat his success in a relatively short time... he'll be well on his way.

It's not gear... it's stories. Tell a good story well and the rest will take care of itself.

I always laugh when they use something like "housecleaner wins U.S. Documentary Directing Award at Sundance".

Given the difficulty in making a living in the industry, having a second income is hardly unusual.

A filmmaker won the award, simple.

Headline should have been, "Filmmaker cleans house in the directing category at Sundance, tells competition 'eat my dust'..."
