Lately it has seemed that when I visit DVXuser, for every 5 helpful posts there are at leats 2 posts that are aimed at thrashing someone. I know there are new people everyday that express their love for DVXuser in their first posts and I do agree. But most of these arguments are petty and stupid.

I see this forum as a collective of a very special person. We are the story tellers of our culture. Think of a past civilization and there was always a story teller. We are that person. We have to power to influence the masses. With the tool of the internet (this forum) we have a chance to not close the door behind us once we get on the inside. We can turn around and give a hand to a fellow story teller. But it seems that are struggling to move up because we have to fight each other.

What we do already is very risky (financial wise). Be it starting your own business for event videography or working on a no budget movie. The real world still demands things from us; we all have to pay the rent at the beginning of the month. We come here to make our lives a little easier by trying to learn. But its really making us take steps back when we have to deal with the real world and other film makers at the same time.

I just ask you DVXusers to take an active role in keeping this a productive and positive forum for both veterens and newbs alike.

lol, Terry.

....

Rubop,

I know I rag too hard on people sometimes when they post things that are unhelpful.

And while I'm just reacting to the problem, I'm still contributing to the degree of conflict somewhat ... I'll try to do better.

I think the biggest things to remember are manners, and to pretend like you're not on the internet but in person, and to try and contribute ESPECIALLY if you have something negative to say.

Few people would walk by a group of people having a conversation and say "this sucks and you're all stupid" but people do it here all the time.

It's fine to have that opinion but people can be polite about it and you shouldn't post something like that unless you are prepared to say why ... one is an attack and the other is criticism that someone may benefit from.

so true and at the same time so funny

In all forums on-line, you must remember that it's easy to display rudeness when
you hide behind your monitor. It brings out the worse in people. After working
with MSNBC chat rooms, Talkcitycom chat rooms, I think I've seen/heard it all.

I almost posted the first reponse in this thread as something like:

"Yeah Jack!"

:)

sorry ... still not working

you have to poke the gorilla with a bigger stick than that ...

... er, wait a minute ... probably not a good thing to say to the maker of "Man-Hole" parts 1,2 & 3 ...

so ... strike that big stick comment ... lets pretend I never said that ... at least not to the Peter Jackson of the Back Door.

You want me to start talking about 2:35 in your movies, mother-****er?

I want you to come take me to lunch RIGHT NOW for being such an asshat.

And because I need to drop off a DVD for the little girl in Bone Hand who lives on the otherside of the park.

But doesn't a cuban sandwich sound good right now?

Dude, I have a job. Can't break out right now. Let me get with you in a little bit, see if I can get away in about an hour or so....Oh wait, you want me to just drive you around Brooklyn?

Whenever there are a bunch of creative people in a room you are going to get arguments, disputes, tiffs, etc. I think alot of the criticism can sometimes make you think. It's opened up my eyes a few times. I'm not talking about: "Your project sucks, and you're an asshole for making me waste ten minutes of my life watching it!"

But some projects really do suck, and if mine happen to be them, I want to know about it! I'm speaking technically of course because no one can label what "art" sucks (although I'm pretty sure I can.) Very rarely do I see posts where I'm thinking "geez, this place sure has turned into a sh it slinging contest." It just doesn't happen that often. What I think happens MORE is people being overly sensitive, much like the post I'm replying to right now. I've sat back more than a few times and thought "geez man, suck it up you ****ing whiner."

I do agree with you about the 2:5 ratio on helpful posts and nonhelpful posts. I think when I first joined (maybe 2 years ago) it seemed like every post had a golden ticket in it. But I think that since it has grown, there are more people willing to talk about minial, everyday stuff that includes either: A discussion (argument as some see it,) or what they did/drank/boned/killed last night. Also I think that since I've grown as a filmmaker maybe less posts are helpful specifically to me because I simply know more now-but they may be to the brand new person.

That is of course, my opinion, and what do I know (my mother did left me when I was a young mite.)

I've only had one person on here just out and out tell me something sucked and it wasted his time. But it was immeditately clear that he was kind of an idiot anyway. So I think it's largely idiots who act like that. Like Jack said above, you would have to be an idiot to walk up to a crowd on the street and tell them they sucked. It never ceases to amaze me that people thing the internet any different...

So I tend to just ignore people who talk like that about someone's work, no matter how bad it is.
