horrible ear shattering sound

I will be editing video on my work computer (24" silver Intel Imac) and suddenly the audio will distort or drop out and a ear piercing static will play through my ear buds. This has happened a few times in the last few weeks. Anybody have a similar issue? Starting to get gun shy here...
Thanks

Using what sort of footage? Anything connected to the machine via Firewire other than a camera? Are you working with MP3 or CD audio?

I've had it happen in both FCP and Soundtrack Pro.

In both apps, everything would play fine, but on some occasion I'd hit play and there would be a sharp and loud sound. Afterwards if I played it again, it'd be fine. In all cases, the audio was in 16-bit or 24-bit 48Khz played from the hard drive as part of a project.

I haven't had it happen in a few weeks and it always seemed like a setting switch in OS or the application as it seemed to have happened as a result of switching back and forth between applications. Can't narrow it down more since I haven't been able to replicate it otherwise.

Don't know if this is related to the problem the original poster is having.

Noah, if I use anything beside the location audio it's aif files. Only other thing connected via firewire is my ext HD (lacie). Footage is DV NTSC.

ps thanks for the bleeding eardrum shortcut, "Awakened". Sounds like one of those sadistic software programmers at work.
