Hooking up NTSC monitor to Apple G5.

Hi folks,

I'm wondering, if i purchase about a $500-1000 13-15" broadcast monitor and hook it up to my g5, will i be able to get a full screen image of the playback window on it, not just a replication of what is on the computer screen?

Also, i've heard there are a few different ways to hook up the monitor. I'll have an extra dvi port on my vid card, so i hear you can get a dvi to s-video converter and then hook it up to the monitor through s-video. OR, you can use your camera, hooking it up through firewire to the computer, and then using component video cables from the camera to the monitor. I've heard that the latter is better in terms of how the image will actually look.

But my main concern is just getting that full screen playback image on the monitor. It would be rather pointless to buy an ntsc video monitor if i didn't get fullscreen playback.

Also, is it difficult to hook up in terms of setting it up in final cut pro?

Do you guys have an recommendations for a monitor in this price range.

Thanks,

Donald

I have one of the little $20 Apple DVI to S-Video adapters, and from what I can tell, it is not ideal for use as a dedicated NTSC video feed. It creates a second desktop and then just mirrors whatever is on that desktop over S-Video. Using a firewire DV device is a much better option in my opinion, and it integrates properly in FCP. I just pump the video back out over the firewire port in my DVX and then hook the composite video up to my monitor. I'm not sure what solution is best if you want component video.

Full frame is not a problem assumign you're dealign with full frame images.
Your video (DV, etc) will fill the monitor just like it does on your TV.
Get a monitor that can overscan so you can see the entire image if you wish. Note that most TV's clip some of the outside, that's why there's safe action/title guides.
Just go Firewire to a camera/deck and out. If your camera has s-video out so much the better.

ok, so i'll definity not be hooking the monitor up to my vid card, that is completely worthless. you could just get a standard tv and it would perform teh same exact function.

yea, i mean i'll more than likely be shooting in 4:3 and then cropping in post. and i have a dvx, so i'll be going computer to camera via firewire, and then camera to monitor, with s-video more than likely.

thanks
