I'm going to Hong Kong for a week. Suggestions where to go for deals? Or is it all junk? Things to do, places to go? I've been practicing dividing by 7.75...
Not sure how the wife would react if I told her I was in a pub called the Mad Dog. Drinking Dogfish Head beer, on the other hand, does not land me in the doghouse.
I'm glad you asked. I happen to be in Hong Kong at the moment.
A good location to shop for electronics is in the area around the Mong Kok station in Kowtoon. "Sin City" is a four-story building that houses a number of small stores carrying tripods, lenses, cameras, and cases. Manfrotto and Gitzo are popular in these stores. Haggling here is acceptable. Out on the street, there are literally dozens of large electronics stores with throngs of people clamoring over the devices all day, but particularly at night.
What's really nice about this area during the evening is that no cars are permitted. You will literally see a sea of people streaming through the streets and sidewalks. It is surreal. Street musicians and performers are out. If you need to tie your shoelaces, you will need to locate a spot next to a building, out of everyone's way.
There is a tourist trap nearby; if you buy here don't pay more than 20% of what they initially ask because most of the same things are available in stores throughout the area at much, much lower prices. It's convenient here because you won't need to enter and exit a bunch of individual stores but you'll have to haggle over everything, which can be quite exhausting.
Prices are, in my experience, pretty much on par with U.S. prices. Haggling, where permitted, will cut the price a bit lower than that. Almost everyone speaks at least a little English.
