Hey guys, I posted a while about wanting to move to HK, but now it looks as if I may be moving to Penang Malaysia instead, Basicly it all depends on where God leads a friend of mine. Where she goes, I'll follow. so now I need to explore Malaysia for industry Jobs, Shooting or VFX, Any help or advice you can give i'll be thankful.

Don't take any hash with you.

All I can say is, I wish you all the best, hope things work out for you.

(1) Always learn as much about your target destination as possible, history, culture, social mannerisms, traditions etc.

(2) Learn a little of that language and it will you take you much further, at the very least make an effort.

(3) Use CommonSense(tm), if something feels fishy (gut feeling) 90% of the time its probaly fishy.

Yea Batutta no kidding, if cought with a single joint on your person, no trial, just exicution.
I only have two worries, one it gets hot, and I've grown whimpy in the san francisco sun, and two, its an Islamic country, and with or without world events, some of them simply hate Americans for everything we are. but I've been told that americans are treated well in Penang so not as worried on that front.

luckely it has several popular languages including English

just hoping someone here eiither has contacts there or at least can point me in a direction.

I feel that is a sad and negative stereotype to be carrying around*. I know what its like being treated as an outsider, every country has its share of xenopobia.

But thats why I should iterate that effort needs to be made to connect with people.

Can it be guaranteed that others will never hold negative stereotypes about us?

No,

but that still does not give us the right to hold negative stereotypes ourselves.

Hope I'm not sounding like I'm lecturing, its a reminder to my self as anybody else.

* I come originally from an Islamic country, and no people do not simply "hate Americans", hating the people no, hating the politics yes: (well I shall not extend further, as that discussion is not allowed here) but you get the idea.

Jason,

I'm in a neighboring country. Just a flight away. Keep us posted when you're in southeast Asia already.

The thing about Malaysia that really surprised me (specialy in KL) was the amount of people speaking cantonese- almost everyone does!

i was there a while ago for a month. The country feels like it is 33,33,33 as in 33% chinese, %33 indian, 33% malay. Penang is a little less Islamic then the rest of the country. But the whole country is super cool. (especially the Islamic people) You will not have any problems. I don't know about industry wise cuz everything was set for me when i went. my camera broke and my year warantee wasnt valid there even tho one of the panasonic headquarters is there. One thing u should do is take a bus to the east side of malaysia from penang. (it will go at night at 120mph on s-curved roads) and take a boat to the perhentian islands. One of the most amazing places in the country. U will love it.
