.. so im sure we all watch different types of films /tv or whatnot to study as our "homework". anyhow , i just want to recommend that one of those little study peices should be the animated show " samurai jack" . why? well .. the show is a great study for the art of storytelling through moving picutre. you see in an average show , there really isnt much dialog, so it really relies on telling the story through what you see. and of course everything is very overly dramatic and stylized, but they actually do use a whole book of camera moves-compositional techniques-edits to convey a variety of things to the viewer. and although its an animated thing, the same sort of techniques could be applied to any project. as far as the storytelling aspects - the characters emotions are cut down to the basics- you know if they are happy-mad -sad- whatever. they dont have to say anything, and if they do its usually very basic, and to the point like "i am sad becuase of this". really its very different to see somthing relying so heavily on the visuals, and so minimally on the dialog, as deffered to alot of stuff that is dialog soup, with no real visual storytelling going on. (you know, where you could cover the screen and still know whats going on from the audio) . anyhow aside from all the technical things we watch for like lighting and such , i think that watching this show at least once could broaden your horizons as a storyteller, or spark some fresh ideas for people.
