homemade wind protection

If there is not heavy rain tomorrow I'm going to film my love fest short. One of the other problems is going to be the wind. Some of the dialog will be done inside. But the outside stuff will be in winds up to 30mph. I just have the normal screen that comes with the shotgun mic.

No time to buy anything good. Plus I'm to low budget at this point.

Is there something homemade I can try?

I filmed in near the beach a few months ago and there was heavy wind. What my sound guy did was have the boom very low and we get several crew members to stand around the sides so their bodies would block the incoming wind. We also used bags, cases even a blanket to block the hole in the "wall" as best we could. Works pretty well, although you won't be able to monitor your audio very effectively because the wind will be constantly slamming into the headphone.

Go to the nearest Wal Mart and buy half a yard of fake fur. If there is more than one type to choose from get the one with the most open weave on the back.Cut a piece to wrap around the foam windscreen. Sew it into a tube shape if you can or know someone who can. If not, tape it down the seam. Should cut wind noise by 50% or so.

They have fake fur at Wal-mart? Not a bad idea.

I was also going to hold up a light reflector. It might throw alittle extra light on their faces too!!!

It is windy today like forecast. Winds gusting up to 30mph.
