Homemade Steadicam

Hey thanks Charles. I patterned it after your old nimble cam rig. On another topic, do you miss operating?

Cheers.

Ha! That's cool! No wonder I liked it! :)

I don't honestly miss operating all that much. I get twinges every now and then...I miss being on set and interacting with the actors, and working out the beats of a shot down to the minutiae. I'm still very involved in shot design, so that hasn't changed much. As far as the physical aspect of operating, particularly Steadicam, I feel like I pretty much got it out of my system over 25 years and I'm happier having moved on. I did actually try on a little rig which reminded me of the Nimblecam last year and ran around for 5 or 10 minutes–it was pretty fun!

I often debate moving over to a motorized 3 axis gimbal. It would make my life easier in many respects but there is just something about flying that connects the operator to camera like no other support system. The organic movement really transfers over to final shot.

Most of the single operator gimbal stuff still has the tell-tale robotic motion during pans and tilts that isn't there with Steadicam. I've refused to get into the "3-axis gimbal" rigs because I just don't like them. I've played with them, but there is just such a disconnect from the camera(in a bad way). Everything is a beat behind what you actually want to do. I wish I was better at Steadicam and had more time to practice.
