Homemade shouldermount

I have a Libec TH-M20 DV Tripod for my AG-HMC150. It has a quick release plate. I wanted to buy a shoulder mounted stabilizer for those times when dragging a tripod through a crowd is just a plain hassle.
Fortunately, my father is a welder. Due to the recession, work is slow at his shop and he has a little free time. I drew up some pictures and he put this together for me:

Here is a close-up of the quick release mechanism:

It's difficult to say what this brace would cost. It was made mostly from parts laying around a professional shop. The female quick-release component was $18 direct from Libec. The nuts and bolts were either found laying around my father's garage or bought for a few cents at the hardware store.

It consists of 4 parts plus the bolts. The silver parts are aluminum. I can only guess the bracket is aluminum as well. There is one welded joint near the shoulder. The corners were ground down and holes were drilled to make it fully adjustable.

I would flip the upward piece around and have the platform facing to the left as that will allow the camera to stick out toward the side where the screen will be. I would find the attached height of the vertical piece that you like and then have your dad TIG weld it on and cut off the bottom of the plate you no longer need and then add a downward handle to the front for stability.

I am impressed with the lightness of the rig and congratulate you for what looks like a useful design. Good work.

I think the original plan was to cut off that bottom part, but it's actually become something of a handle (albeit a handle in need of some foam padding).

I'm still getting the comfort adjustments right. Maybe I'll try flipping it, as you suggested.

Thanks for looking!
