homemade lcd hood

i built my own lcd hood last night for 2.00 i used some black foam rubber material from a hobby store, and some nice strap+ elastic  material for a strap to hold it to the lcd. fits snugly perfectly flat against the lcd letting no light in. cost me $2 and 1 hour of work looks nice and is of course custom built. it can sty on when the lcd is facing out folded flat against the dvx too. it also folds flat for transport, and pops back open when out of any packing holding it flat. best part is its completely replaceble so i dont have to care if i lose it somewhere, but it is waterproof, and even washable i guess. id post a pic, but the frame grab o matic has no server to rest its head on right now.. not sure why im posting about it, but alot of DYI ers like to hear stuff like this i guess.

Homemade Mattebox

Homemade Mattebox

[shadow=red,left,300]Homemade Matte box [/shadow] You can make one from Black Foamcore or Thin Black Plastic and Black Gaffer Tape. Cost is $10 for the foamcore. Not as cool as the real thing, but it got me through a few pennyless shoots, and it works. You cut two Rhombus shapes with the longest side at 8" and the shortest side at 4.5" (the width of your DVX lens shade). The distance between the two sides should be 4.5". Those are the top and bottom pieces. Then two more Rhombus shapes with the longest side at 6", and the shortest side at 4" (the height of your DVX lens shade). Cut with a very sharp razor. Assemble the pieces with gaffer's tape. If you're using foam-core, tape the edges so it will look better. You will have a completed matte box at that point, that should fold flat. You can add a french flag at whatever size you prefer. Then use sticky velcro on the lens shade and the mattebox, so that you can velcro the shade on and off the camera. If you use really good measurements and plastic instead of foamcore, you will a pretty cool device for about $20. Even just as a back up. Also, you can make shorter or longer versions if you're using telephoto or wideangle lenses. I would also shorten the length of the side pieces if you like to use backlights close to the subjects inline with the lens. Or you can spring for the new soft-sided mattebox. Email me if you want a diagram for all this. ::)

Re: homemade lcd hood

hey rush, i already built a mattebox like that.. its got adjustable side wings and everything.. and straps onto the anamorphic front .. i built it before crosziel stared modifying the adaptor to wirk with the 411-53 model matte box. i built a bottom flag onto it as well, cause i was shooting alot over water where i would get bounced flares from beneath. it works really well , and the flags are positionable, i used thin aluminum sheet , and actually slit the foamcore matteboard in the middle and inserted the sheet for rigidity, and the hinges are out of the aluminum too, so you can put the flag in position, and it stays there. i just noticed taylor said i could send the pics. so ill try to remember to send those tonight taylor. ill send some of the mattebox as well. ive also been slowly putting together a homebuilt 15mm rod system+ follow focus, and could finish it in about 1 hour if i wanted i guess, but we all know how busy it gets. just not a priority at all...im only building it for fun, but only cost me 40.00. i just have to mill out the rod mount baseplate, and the focus gear mount is all.

Aluminum panels inside the foamcore... Wow! I never woulda thought of that. That sounds awesome. Question: How were you able to make the hinges so that the flaps stay in place?

Re: homemade lcd hood

hey iamloser.. email me the pics and I will post them here if you want.

Re: homemade lcd hood

jarred-i sent the pics to taylor-moore already he was going to try to post them tonight

rush- for the hinges, i ran a small tab of aluminum sheet (like 1 1/2 " wide by 2 inches long) halfway into a slit on the main frame that velcos onto the adaptor, and then ran the other half into a slit on the flag, the aluminum was of couse model glued into the slits, and then you have a bendable hinge that holds its position. pending the thickness of the aluminum you use it will be more or less rigid. the side wings are built differently.. youll see when taylor posts the pics , but the wings are sort of sandwhiched between the main box of the wing, and an outerpanel that is screwed to the inner box with a little less than one board thickness inbetween, so they just slide in or out, and stay put snugly . hard to explain... see pics
the things may look greyish in some pics cause i used a long exposer on the cam to take the pics, (didnt want to use flash)
but they are both very dark flat black and non reflective.
the glue i used for the flags is not too hard , so you can pull a flag out if you wanted, and replace it with a larger/smaller whatever one easily.

Re: homemade lcd hood

Thanks IAL and Taylor for posting. God I love the guerilla mentality. Some things we can't get around in terms of need and high price but things like this are perfect.

We all know that the cost of the store bought brands are real close to the cost we can do it ourselves. Thanks again guys. Maybe there should be a section called 'Guerilla X'
