HomeBuilt stabilizer Vest

Would you consider machining parts and selling? Don't necessarily have to put them together, just the raw main components.

Edit- Nevermind just noticed this has already been asked.

Yes, it can be done. What did you exactly have your mind set on? The vest or arm parts?

I am looking into building one of these pretty soon. How did you go about figuring out the spring forces, etc?

Amazing job by the way! Some of those pieces look very heavy though. Of course just my opinion but couldn't you have put some more lightening holes/slots?

The spring calculations were done using a formula on HBS. Check out the formula forum.

The arm weighs in at about 4,5kg. And if it looks beefy than the rigidity of the arm is exactly what it is suppose to be. ;) The steadicam Master arm weighs in at 5kg. So there. ;) Putting in more holes you run the risk of minimizing the strength of the arm itself.

Is that a standard socket block? Would you sell just the socket block?

Yes, it is standard, Selling the female block only. Selling the complete arm would be very expensive. I am just giving out something around a ballpark area...$2500 -$3000. Yes it sounds expensive but it is 10 times cheaper than the higher brand systems. I'm working on a website so I can post more info on this.

Haha! Touché! It just looks beefy that's all, which truthfully, if it weighs less than the steadicam one and is still beefy than that's the best of both worlds. Congrats! :)

By the way, roughly how long did the whole process from beginning the project to completion take you? Also, how did you go about the design? Is it a (more or less) direct copy, in terms of mechanics, of the Steadicam one or are there differences?

Ive got a steadicam arm, I could do with a socket block for a vehicle mount thats all...

I have not considered doing such a mod for vehicle mounts but it is something that I can have done. Being you just need the female part along with the bracket for the mount. If you are in a hurry then you might as well buy one from the Tiffen or White house.

Peter -

The Flyer socket block isn't universal. It's shared by the Flyer and Pilot and Merlin Arm and Vest systems, but the socket block size is smaller, and the pin it uses is a different diameter. You could probably order a female Flyer socket block from Tiffen.

If you're looking for one for a more standard rig though, nevermind this.

Hey charles let me know when you are going into production with all this. I really love this vest and arm. But if i can get the fully mounted vest and just the parts of the arm it would be great

Yeah Peter to confirm the Flyer is definitely not a standard block and is available for just over $100 USD if I remember right.

If you're just looking to mount to speedrail or similiar I've got the specs for the u-bolts and aluminum plate that Tiffen is using with McMaster part numbers for the hardware. Drill a few holes and line it all up and you are set.

Per Mike Craig at Tiffen:
At the factory, we use 6061 Temper 6 (for the plate) so I would recommend using that as well. For hardware, grade 5 will be fine. For U-Bolts, we use McMaster Carr part number 3043t29.

I had asked him about using 1/4" Aluminum plate and making my own and that thought that would work just fine and added the above specs.

Back to topic -

Very awesome rigs Charles. Have been contemplating doing some modifying to my flyer vest - mainly a shorter spar on the front as I'm just a tad short for it. Keep up the good work and keep us posted on how it goes. Few have the patience and skill to make something of this kind of quality.

wow, are these all rigs you just have laying around?

They are rigs that have been going through many transitions over time. They do not exist any more. They were more of an experiment build in my quest to developing the more finer rig which I am in the process of building. Like th earm and vest in my first post.

My system is a collection of steadicam parts and HB components. I am working on starting a small business that does mods for very specific systems like the EFP vest and alternatives for GC V16/v20 sleds and vest. The vest you see n my first post is the reconstruction of my Steadicam EFP vest which I moded to handle heavier loads. The original EFP spars had broken when I purchased it and decided to I was going to fix it but then went on to reconstruct it with a complete machined spar and brest plate. The only thing that is original on the vest is the lower back padding and the safty line on the back.

This was the original EFP vest with along with the broken spar:

I've also got an idea for moding the GC sleds to be tool free adaptable to dynamic adjustments.

Yeah I know. CP has stuck a big socket block on his Flyer, Il just do the same.

Im upgrading to a clipper 324 or u2 soon anyway...

Wow! If you still have any of those rigs i like to buy them from you. How many do you have man?

Another question. What is this efp vest you keep talking about?

Unfortunately I do not have any of those rigs any more. They were more experimental rigs than anything else. :)
