Home Grown Hardware Solutions

I've noticed in reading past posts and checking for myself - how expensive some of the add-on items are for the DVX100A. While I can see that items requiring lenses and other precision optics should be professionally made, other things however are just plain ridiculous in price. This "french flag" - a ridiculous piece of carboard or thin metal - whose sole purpose is to block light (sunlight, etc.) from above, or a simple gear-ratio drive for the follow-focus ($1,200 on ebay and still needs more items), or a matte box with slots for filters - jeez. What a rip-off. Seems to me that this little cottage industry, like so many other business interests, wants to capitalize on the displayed, perceived lack of mechanical know-how.

I will make it my personal mission to make the required simple attachments without spending those ridiculous sums. And if any here are intersted - I will be willing to provide details -and in the event someone is "mechanically challenged" - we can come to some agreement to have the hardware made.
Either way, I will be able to solve my needs with minimal monetary cost.

Please let me know if there is interest in what I propose.

Take care

Re: Home Grown Hardware Solutions

Mate if you have a look around on this site you will realise that you are not alone in that onpinion and there is a lot of interest in any simple designs for these sort of things that you can come up with.
I would call myself resonably mechanically challenged so I am hanging out to see some VERY simple designs ;D

Re: Home Grown Hardware Solutions

Prototype drawings for simple mattebox/lens cover is done. Al that is left is to get exact measurements and some recommendations for needed supplies (minimal supplies)

Will keep you posted.

Re: Home Grown Hardware Solutions

If you come up with something to show on this site, there will be plenty of interest. I might suggest you post to the LATEST NEWS section and watch what happens.

In the past, I have 'fiddled' with scratch built models, props, and other various gizmos and would never spend $1000 + for a lens hood when I could make one. You might have a nice little niche market and under cut the large companies who have a lot of overhead and advertising investments to recapture.

Re: Home Grown Hardware Solutions

Now that is idea. I am pretty new here and am trying hard not to step on anyones toes and post only to the appropriate forum. Did not think that was news - but it could be. I thought since its hardware related, I can't go wrong here.

I would appreciate some guidance from "the powers that be" here and runn this nice site.

Thank you

Re: Home Grown Hardware Solutions

I'll be excited if you come up with a nice design for my dream add-on: A follow-focus style device that has knobs for both focus AND zoom! Maybe with optional cable drive, too...

Re: Home Grown Hardware Solutions

The follow-focus is on my list as an "A" project - that means I need a little time to locate proper materials (off the shelf) with minimal modications - before the design is done.

The zoom issue is interesting - and I would have some questions on proper placement from experienced DVX users as to best/most intuitive location for that know. I made a not to ask that very question when the time comes.

Thanks

Re: Home Grown Hardware Solutions

Hmmm....is there a FAQ to gather up all these do it yourself solutions? Stick it on the latest news page to keep track of it all?
